Lighting is the single most influential design decision in a jewelry store. The same diamond can look dull under one light and brilliant under another. This guide covers the technical choices that separate a premium jewelry environment from an ordinary one.
Color temperature: match the metal
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Lower numbers are warmer; higher numbers are cooler. For jewelry retail:
- 3000K warm white — ideal for yellow gold, rose gold, and pearls. It enhances richness and flatters skin tones.
- 4000K neutral white — the standard for diamonds, platinum, and white gold. It reveals brilliance and fire without casting warmth.
- Avoid 5000K+ daylight inside cases — it can make metals look harsh and wash out colored stones.
Many premium stores use 3000K for the ambient room and 4000K inside the cases, creating a warm shopping environment with precise product illumination.
CRI: why 90+ matters
Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to natural light. A CRI below 80 makes gemstones look muddy. Specify CRI 90 or above for all case lighting; for colored gemstone boutiques, CRI 95+ is worth the premium.
Beam angles and placement
How light hits the piece matters as much as the light itself:
- Spotlights at 30 degrees create focused pools of light on individual cases.
- Linear LEDs inside the case frame provide even, shadow-free illumination from above.
- Side-firing or uplighting adds dimension to tall pieces and sculptures.
- Avoid placing lights directly in the customer's line of sight — glare kills the viewing experience.
Layer your lighting
A professional jewelry store uses three layers: ambient light for comfort, accent light for product, and decorative light for atmosphere. Skipping any one layer flattens the space. Dimming controls let you shift the mood from day to evening.
