How to Choose Jewelry Display Cases: 7 Essentials in Glass, Lighting & Security

A jewelry display case is not a piece of furniture — it is a precision instrument. It must protect high-value goods, present them under perfect light, and survive years of daily use. When evaluating cases, focus on these seven essentials before you consider aesthetics.

1. Glass: low-iron for true color

Standard float glass has a faint green tint that distorts gemstone color. Low-iron (extra-white) glass eliminates this tint and transmits up to 91% of light. For diamond and colored-gemstone retail, low-iron glass is non-negotiable. Pair it with an anti-reflective coating for glare-free viewing under spotlights.

2. Lighting: color temperature and CRI

The right light makes metal and stones look their best; the wrong light kills them. Aim for a CRI of 90 or above. Use 3000K warm white for yellow gold and pearls, and 4000K neutral white for diamonds and platinum. Adjustable beam angles let you highlight individual pieces without washing out the whole case.

3. Security: laminated glass and concealed locks

Security should be invisible but absolute. Laminated or tempered glass resists impact; electronic or magnetic locks keep the case sealed without visible hardware; and alarm contacts integrated into the frame ensure any tampering triggers the store system instantly.

4. Structure: stainless steel or reinforced MDF

The case frame determines longevity. 304 stainless steel offers commercial durability and a clean finish; lacquered MDF provides a cost-effective, customizable substrate for painted or veneered surfaces. The choice depends on budget, brand aesthetic, and expected lifespan.

5. Proportion: height, depth, and sightlines

A case that is too deep forces customers to lean; one that is too high hides the top row. Counter-height cases work for browsing; pedestal and tower cases create hierarchy. Plan sightlines from the store entrance before finalizing dimensions.

6. Adjustable interiors

Collections change. Shelves on a pin system, removable risers, and interchangeable velvet inserts let you remerchandise in minutes. Fixed interiors condemn you to one layout forever.

7. Brand consistency

Finally, the case should carry your brand — through finish, hardware, lighting temperature, and proportion. A mismatched case undermines even the strongest collection.
